A variety of organisations work to connect Jews – and, in some cases, non-Jewish travellers as well – with Jewish mysticism and traditional Hasidic life. For a list of options, see the Learning Centers section of http://safed.co.il.

Note that some places have an agenda (turning secular Jews into Orthodox ones) that they’re not completely above-board about, so while questioning is ostensibly encouraged, those in search of frank, truly open give-and-take may be disappointed.

Tzfat Kabbalah Center Kabbalah

Offline map (International Center for Tzfat Kabbalah; www.tzfat-kabbalah.org; 1st fl, Fig Tree Courtyard, 18 Alkabetz St, Synagogue Quarter; 9am-6pm Sun-Thu, to 1pm Fri) Adherents of all religions, or none at all, are welcome to drop by for an introduction to Jewish mysticism and on-the-spot meditation. Hour-long personalised workshops with Eyal Riess, who lectures around the world on the Tsfat Kabbalah tradition, cost 100NIS to 200NIS. Screens films (15NIS) on Tsfat in Hebrew, English, Spanish and Russian.

Livnot U’Lehibanot Jewish

Offline map ( 052-429 5377; www.livnot.com; Alkabetz St, Synagogue Quarter) Offers young Jewish adults classes, hikes, inexpensive accommodation and community service opportunities. Orthodox-run but low-pressure. The name means ‘to build and be built’.

Ascent Institute of Safed Kabbalah

Offline map ( 04-692 1364; www.ascentofsafed.com; 2 Ha’Ari St; classes at 9.15am, noon & 8.30pm Sun-Thu) Offers Jews interested in ‘spiritual discovery’ drop-in classes on the Torah and Jewish mysticism. Run by members of the Chabad Hasidic movement.
